Dentistry
Dogs and
cats can’t brush their teeth. But foul breath and
yellow-brown teeth are not only unappealing, they could indicate
serious condition called periodontal disease. And
periodontal disease can lead to other health problems.
Periodontal disease is an infection of
the gums that is most commonly caused by the buildup of plaque and
tartar in a pet’s mouth. This often painful infection can
spread through the bloodstream to the heart, liver and kidneys
leading to health problems that can shorten the life of your pet.
Without
proper dental care, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show
signs of oral disease by age three. In fact, oral disease
is the Number One health problem diagnosed in dogs and cats.
Hilltop Pet Clinic has a Dental Suite
with a dental radiograph machine as well as a state of the art
dental machine with an ultrasonic scaler. Our Doctors and
staff are trained to perform full dental examinations, dental
extractions and oral surgery. Staff can discuss preventative
techniques with owners and make recommendations, including teeth
brushing, chews and toys that can help decrease further tarter
buildup. Hilltop Pet Clinic’s progressive approach to
veterinary dentistry assures that pets receive the care and
diagnosis equivalent to that provided by human family dentists

Acupuncture
Hilltop Pet Clinic is excited to offer a new
service to their clients. We would like to introduce the
integrative service of veterinary medical acupuncture to the cutting
edge veterinary care we already provide.
Acupuncture is a technique
that dates back thousands of years and is now being described and
understood in modern scientific terms. We employ a
veterinarian who has been certified through Colorado State
University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Veterinary
Medical Acupuncture. She is a member of the International
Veterinary Acupuncture Society.
This technique has the potential to improve quality of
life for patients suffering from chronic pain from musculoskeletal
disease (such as arthritis), neurologic disease (such as
intervertebral disc disease or facial nerve paralysis) as well as
improving the athleticism of performance animals such as dogs shown
in agility, obedience or field trials. This complementary
technique can be used to aid in the treatment of a variety of
medical ailments and improve homeostasis, gastrointestinal motility
and immune function. This technique is also available to aid
in pain control associated with surgical and dental procedures.
Acupuncture involves the placement of very small,
rounded, disposable, sterilized acupuncture needles into specific
acupoints on the body that are usually associated with neurovascular
bundles or related structure. The needles can then be
stimulated through a variety of techniques, including transcutaneous
electrostimulation (TENS). Acupuncture treatments allow the
doctor to interact with the nervous system, immune system, and
inflammatory mediators, down regulation the pain receptors and
hormones associated with heightened pain response as well as
improving the body's natural mechanisms associated with good health
through decreasing a pathologic stress response and improving immune
function.

Microchips
Hilltop Pet Clinic thoroughly endorses
micro-chipping as a safe, effective and inexpensive method to ensure
that beloved pets can be reunited with the families who love them.
Ten million unidentified pets get lost every year and 90%
don’t return home! Compared with these statistics, over 94% of
micro-chipped pets have been reunited with their
families. All shelters and veterinary hospitals have microchip
scanners which means that micro-chipped pets can quickly and easily
be identified if brought to a facility.
Hilltop Pet Clinic uses Home Again microchips. They
are approximately the size of a grain of rice and are inserted
under the skin with a syringe. Microchips are often
implanted at the time of spay or neuter, but can also be inserted
when the patient is awake as part of a regular exam. |
